Since anxiety is nothing more than our reaction to environment there is something we can do to overcome it. It is possible to change our anxiety reaction.
The 5 steps for overcoming anxiety are:
- Acknowledgement: The first step is to acknowledge the anxiety and realize there is a way to defeat it.
- Find the source of pain: How can what you fear harm you?
- Avoidance: re-examine how you might avoid it. If there is a way to permanently avoid it do so.
- Realization: Discover what is really causing your fear. As you know, fear is a mechanism to keep us safe. Some fears are built in (like fear of heights) while most are learned. This step identifies what one has learned that causes the fear.
- Replacement: Gradually, the learned fear can be replaced and eliminated. This step teaches people how to do that.
- Acceptance: Sometimes there is nothing that can be done to avoid pain. The only thing left is to minimize it as best as possible then stop resisting it. Resisting only adds suffering to the pain.
These steps have helped many people overcome their anxiety. The first step is simply to believe that something can be done then to try it for yourself.
